{"id":1897,"date":"2022-02-27T01:56:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balkan-history.org\/goli-otok\/"},"modified":"2022-02-27T19:10:29","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T18:10:29","slug":"goli-otok","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/balkan-history.org\/en\/goli-otok\/","title":{"rendered":"Goli Otok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Goli Otok was the site of a prison camp for political prisoners, which remained in operation for six years, from 1949 to 1956.<\/p>\n<p>The camp was established with the intent to isolate and \u2018re-educate\u2019 those individuals suspected of possibly siding with the USSR in a potential conflict between Yugoslavia and the USSR, offering support to the USSR, and participating in the possible toppling of the Yugoslav government. Goli Otok was considered a camp for <em>Ibeovci <\/em>(\u2018IBers\u2019 or \u2018Cominformers\u2019, supporters of the Cominform), but turned into a camp for imprisoning anyone who was opportunistically branded as an <em>Ibeovac <\/em><\/p>\n<p>There were separate camps for men and women. The Yugoslav public had no knowledge of the camps, while the inmates, once released, were forbidden from speaking about their existence.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content_no_spaces&#8221;
