THE CHETNIKS

The Chetniks (Serbian/Croatian Cyrillic/Latin: Четници/Četnici) were members of a guerrilla movement that emerged at the beginning of the Second World War in Yugoslavia under the leadership of Dragoljub Draža Mihailović (Serbian Cyrillic: Драгољуб Дража Михаиловић). Although the movement’s initial goal was to fight those who had invaded and occupied the country, very early on the Chetniks went into open collaboration with the occupiers and their Yugoslav allies. Instead of liberating the country, for the rest of the war the Chetniks’ main purpose would be fighting the Yugoslav Partisans and communists. Over the course of the war, Chetnik formations committed mass atrocities driven by ideological and ethnic motives.
